About the Production

A woman struggles against a curse inherited from her ancestors—the Futakuchi Onna.

This Japanese yōkai manifests as a relentless second mouth growing from the back of her head, interrupting her music, sabotaging her relationships, and pushing her toward despair. As she fights to silence the monster, she gradually discovers that the voice she fears most may also reveal the truth about herself.

Featuring original music, live piano, and an original short film, Futakuchi Onna transforms an ancient folktale into a deeply personal story about confronting shame, embracing vulnerability, and learning to live with every part of who we are.

About the Artist

Kristin Joy Moran is an actress, playwright, musician, and retired elementary music teacher based in Phoenix, Arizona.

After portraying Madame Hattori in Shanna Fujii’s award-winning short film Madame Hattori’s Izakaya, Kristin discovered the haunting Japanese legend of the Futakuchi Onna. Inspired by both the folklore and her own personal reflections, she created this original solo performance.

Futakuchi Onna received Best Drama at the 2024 Tucson Fringe Festival and Outstanding Drama at the 2025 San Diego Fringe Festival. Her second original solo play, Baldwin, premiered at the 2026 San Diego Fringe Festival.

Kristin continues creating original theatre that explores identity, grief, transformation, and the stories that connect us across cultures.
