Seeing Differently
Throughout our lives, we are taught to explain outcomes through the characteristics of individuals.
We speak about talent, ability, confidence, intelligence, motivation, creativity, resilience, and skill. We celebrate achievement and analyze failure. We search for what makes one person succeed while another struggles.
But what if there is another question worth asking?
What if possibility is shaped not only by people, but also by the conditions surrounding them?
What if environments, expectations, communication systems, timing, participation structures, materials, and relationships influence what becomes possible in ways we rarely notice?
And what if changing those conditions changes the possibilities that emerge?
Seeing Differently
The first day focuses on perception.
Participants examine assumptions about talent, ability, participation, competence, creativity, and human potential. Through stories, discussion, reflection, and environmental analysis, they begin recognizing the role conditions play in shaping outcomes.
Together, participants investigate questions such as:
- What changes when conditions change?
- What assumptions shape our understanding of ability?
- How do environments influence participation?
- What invisible costs often remain unseen?
- What possibilities become available when we shift our perspective?
The day culminates in a deeper understanding of how environments, systems, and structures influence what becomes possible.
This Is a Course About Possibility
What Might Happen If We Let It? is an immersive two-day master class exploring these questions through stories, reflection, discussion, artistic inquiry, environmental analysis, and practical design exercises.
Participants investigate how conditions shape creativity, participation, learning, collaboration, and artistic emergence.
Along the way, they examine assumptions they may never have questioned and begin noticing possibilities they may never have considered.
The course does not offer a formula.
It offers a lens.
A way of seeing.
Accessibility Is One Pathway Into the Inquiry
Accessibility appears throughout the master class because it provides powerful examples of how changing conditions can reveal possibilities that were previously hidden, suppressed, or unavailable.
The deeper inquiry concerns artistic emergence, human potential, participation, creativity, environment, and possibility.

Participants enter a process of investigation through stories, artistic examples, discussion, reflection, observation, and collaborative inquiry.
They explore how conditions influence outcomes and how assumptions shape perception.

Designing Differently
Once we begin seeing conditions differently, we can begin asking what those conditions might become.
Participants examine real environments, analyze participation structures, explore the relationship between limitation and creativity, investigate accessibility as a possible artistic medium, and develop redesign proposals for environments they know and care about.
Designing Differently
The second day shifts from observation to creation.
Having explored how conditions shape possibility, participants begin investigating how conditions can be intentionally designed.
Through case studies, collaborative exercises, design challenges, and practical application, participants examine participation structures, creative constraints, accessibility as artistic practice, and the conditions that support emergence.
Questions include:
- How is participation designed?
- What distinguishes a productive constraint from a barrier?
- Can accessibility function as a creative medium?
- What conditions support artistic emergence?
- How might we redesign environments to create new possibilities?
The Inquiry Becomes Practical
The master class concludes with a redesign laboratory in which participants apply the concepts of the course to a real environment they know and care about.
Participants leave not only with new insights, but with practical ideas for implementation.
The point is not to leave with the right answer.
The point is to notice differently.
Who Should Attend?
This master class is designed for anyone interested in creativity, participation, learning, leadership, design, or artistic practice.
Participants may include artists, educators, teaching artists, facilitators, arts leaders, advocates, practitioners, and organizational leaders.
No prior knowledge of accessibility, disability studies, design theory, or theatre is required.
The only requirement is curiosity.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the master class, participants will be able to:

- Identify participation structures within artistic, educational, and organizational settings.

30-Day Inquiry
Approximately thirty days after the master class, participants are invited to reconvene for a facilitated reflection session.
Together, they explore:
- Actions taken
- Outcomes observed
- Surprises encountered
- Questions that remain
- New possibilities that have emerged
The purpose is continued inquiry.
The Inquiry Can Continue
For participants wishing to deepen their involvement, Arizona Theatre Matters offers a facilitator development pathway.
Certified Participant
Awarded upon successful completion of the master class.
Participants join a growing community of artists, educators, leaders, and practitioners exploring how conditions shape possibility.
Certified Facilitator
Available through additional training, mentorship, observation, and assessment.
Certified Facilitators are authorized to deliver What Might Happen If We Let It? within approved educational, artistic, organizational, and community settings.
Master Facilitator
Available through demonstrated practice, mentorship, and contribution to the ongoing stewardship of the methodology.
Master Facilitators support facilitator development, curriculum refinement, and long-term program growth.
Completing the master class does not by itself authorize a participant to facilitate the course. Facilitator development is a separate pathway involving additional training, mentorship, observation, practice, and assessment.
Participants should leave with something larger than information.
